Did You Know ~

  • The WHS rebuild is nearing the end of Phase 3 – the final phase of the project!
  • Phase 3 interior work in wings A and B is nearing completion.  All new furniture and technology will begin to be delivered and installed over the coming month.
  • The completion of the academic year kicks off the rapid removal of all modular classrooms, and summer work will focus primarily on completing the exterior site work around the WHS campus.
  • Trees are arriving!  Hopefully you have had a chance to see new trees planted both in front and in back of the school, as well as along the perimeter of portions of Skillings Field.  Landscape efforts will continue into the fall for optimal planting conditions.
  • The WHS site will be closed to the public for final construction work beginning on Wednesday, June 28.  All meetings with parents and students will occur off campus, primarily at the Lincoln School Library.  The regular school phone numbers will be in use.
  • To help maintain the Town’s investment in the rebuilt WHS facility, the Town’s Department of Public Works has hired a dedicated facilities manager, who is already on the job to best ensure knowledge and training for managing HVAC and other systems, energy efficiency and general facilities maintenance.
  • With the approval of funding by Winchester’s voters and Town Meeting, final design is underway for an artificial turf baseball/multisport play field at Skillings.  The field is expected to be completed in late November, with parking at Skillings Field open earlier in the fall 2017, as originally planned.

  • Mark your calendars!  The ribbon cutting for the completed project is scheduled for the morning of Tuesday, September 12.  More information to follow, but please plan to come, celebrate, and be thanked for participating in the community’s support!

Did You Know ~

  • Phase 3, the final phase of the WHS renovation project, continues to move at a furious pace.  Interior drywall, painting and other finishes are well underway in both academic wings.
  • Exterior building finishes will be substantially complete in the coming months.  Current construction activity will lead into a busy summer of bringing the building and site to a successful finish for the start of school in September 2017!
  • Completed new spaces are being well utilized by teachers and students, with science labs being used every day for all types of experiments, inquiries and exploration.  Students are creating amazing products in the technology, engineering and art spaces!
  • As part of the completion of the WHS renovation, a time capsule will be sealed into the building.  WHS students are assembling the capsule’s contents, with the Class of 2017 contributing to submissions from last year’s graduating class.
  • On Skillings Field, removal of excavated soil and installation of a fabric cap (separate from the WHS project) continue.  Rough grading of the baseball field is underway.
  • Although not a part of the previously approved WHS renovation or Skillings remediation work, Winchester registered voters will soon consider a modification to a portion of the work remaining on Skillings Field.  The Board of Selectmen has voted, with unanimous support from the School Committee, to place on the ballot for the Town’s March 28 election a question regarding creation of a turf field at Skillings.  Approval by voters (and subsequently at Town Meeting) would result in a debt exclusion override to local property taxes to fund an artificial turf baseball field, with an outfield that would serve multi-sport purposes.  A “no” vote would result in a grass play field, in accordance with the original plan for Skillings Field contained in the WHS renovation project plan.  For more information, please visit the Town’s web site at

  • Phase 3, the final construction phase, is fully underway.  Exterior and interior framing as well as roofing are near completion.  With the building enclosed, interior finishes may begin.  Exterior façade work will continue over the next few months.

WHS Project Update: Phase 2 Nears Completion Thu, 25 Aug 2016 22:45:09 +0000

Tuesday, September 6th will mark the start of the 2016-17 school year and the beginning of the third and final phase of the Winchester High School construction project. Winchester residents are invited to meet new WHS Principal Dennis Mahoney and see the completed spaces at the WHS Open House on Thursday, September 1st, from 5 to 7 p.m.

What spaces are finished?

This fall, WHS students and staff members will fully use most of the shared educational and community spaces. In addition to the dining commons and media center/library (opened last fall), the auditorium renovations have been completed with the installation of both FM and loop assisted listening systems, new seating, fly loft, and new finishes.

Last year’s musicians enjoyed the benefits of several new classrooms. The administrators, nurses, and guidance staff members have occupied expanded spaces to the left of the new front entrance.

Winchester physical education students and teams will benefit this fall from new locker and team facilities, as well as an expanded fitness center. With new, larger windows and an improved, quieter heating and ventilation system, the refurbished gym will be used to host Sachem basketball, wrestling, and volleyball contests this year.

Students and teachers will also use several new core academic spaces, including science classrooms/labs, updated and renovated technology, art rooms, television/media studio, and wood/metal fabrication spaces in September.

At the end of the 2015/2016 school year there was an issue with a backup in the plumbing system. This was reviewed by the design team and it was determined that the pipes that were clogging would be required to be increased in size from 4”to 6.”  This work is now complete and the larger pipe is in place.

What is next?

During the last phase of the project, which will conclude in August 2017, construction will focus on renovation of the two main academic wings, improved site parking, and final landscaping. Temporary modular classrooms will be used for most core academic classrooms during 20162017, since classrooms on the southeastern side of the building are under construction.

For this school year, student parking will be relocated to the Borggaard Beach parking lot and the access road within the Wildwood Cemetery (Palmer St. entrance) beginning Tuesday September 6, 2016. Students should plan extra time to walk to campus from this satellite parking area. On-campus parking will be reserved for staff members and on-street parking near WHS is very limited.

The new WHS facility will be fully completed in September 2017. Residents are encouraged to stay up-to-date by visiting this website. Questions or comments should be sent to

The WHS students and staff members thank Winchester residents for their support of this great project!

Winchester High School Building Project: Phase II Wed, 18 Nov 2015 19:23:53 +0000

At the start of summer 2015, construction was nearly complete in the dining commons, library, music, and administration areas. In addition, demolition work began on E and C wings with demolition of existing spaces and walls on the site’s north side. When school opened in August 2015, students and teachers were thrilled to occupy the new spaces. Classrooms in the A and B wings and modular classrooms on two sides of the building were put in use for classroom space.

Phase II: C Wing

The first of three academic wings to be renovated is C wing. After summer demolition, the wing was taken down to its original concrete structure and structural steel braces were installed. A new façade will be installed to match the materials used in Phase I. As with all academic wings, the most exciting change to the existing wing will be new, sun-filled learning spaces. Classrooms will be relocated to the exterior perimeter, where there will be an abundance of natural light. All new classrooms will include up-to-date technology and furniture.

C-Wing spaces include:

  • Technology labs
  • Art classrooms
  • Science classrooms, with labs

Phase II: E Wing

The largest wing in the school is also getting a major upgrade. Summer demolition resulted in the removal of all interior walls. Exterior facades will be re-faced with new materials. E Wing is the nerve center of the site as all electrical, heating, plumbing, and telephone/data service enter the building here.

The gymnasium area is being upgraded with new work-out spaces and restrooms. New lighting, backboards, and paint will update this space. Students will soon be able to access this area from the second floor or the school with the completion of a connector tunnel.

The new layout on the first floor of E Wing includes:

  • Athletic offices and locker rooms
  • Television studio
  • Storage areas
  • Custodial spaces

Scheduled Completion of Phase II

This second phase is scheduled to be completed at the end of the summer of 2016. We look forward to sharing this beautiful new learning space with the Winchester community!
